Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Episode 11

September 27, 2009

Seeing Nozomu without his glasses is a pretty odd experience in itself, but this is exacttly how episode eleven of Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei opens, with our favourite despairing teacher eschewing his glasses (which were supposedly stolen by ghosts) for a pair of contacts. Umineko No Naku Koro Ni Episode 13

I personally love those series in which you can never be sure what to expect, which is exactly the case in Umineko. Even after being spoiled that Beatrice was going to die I still loved how this episode played out. Seriously, can this series get even more intriguing? Read the rest of this entry ?

Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Episode 10

September 21, 2009

What came first, the chicken or the egg? It’s a classic question, but (if you inhabit the world of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei) it’s also a question that can be posited in numerous other walks of life. For example, what came first – idol groups, or fans of idol groups; tea, or tea time? The answer might seem obvious, but with enough twisted logic you can never be sure, and if nothing else such bizarre logic made for a few laughs here (not least my own amusement at the portrayal of the emergence of the Great British tea time). Princess and the Vampire…

I know, I know….I’ve seen yet other Anime Look-alike, but let’s face it. With the lower number of variables in anime, there are bound to be a lot of very similar looking characters, particularly where the character design is even just similar in style.

I love Yukine Honami’s artwork. The emotions of her characters are so evident, they don’t need a dialog assist, it’s all on the page. While I was able to able to put my qualms about Katsura (he’s 17 and looks 12) to rest due to the affecting manner in which the story is depicted, I admit to some initial reservations about the side story.
This short story is written and drawn by Honami exclusively, and shows Katsura and Sou hanging out together during the summer. Katsura is working on his summer homework when Sou embraces Katsura and begins to fondle him. Katsura is very embarrassed about the obvious outcome. None of this is presented in a vulgar fashion. There is little dialog and the action is depicted discretely.

Umineko No Naku Koro Ni Episode 12

Holy crap… this series really seems to just get better and better over time. This episode not only was a major step up when compared to the first episodes of the first and second arc, but it was also much more solid, composed and the voice acting was also better than ever. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but I really hope that the creators can keep this up. Read the rest of this entry ?

Series Review: Chirin no Suzu

September 17, 2009

Chirin_no_Suzu

This may sound weird, but I have vivid memories of watching Bambi as a kid; while I loved the animals, I was always uneasy with the part where Bambi’s mother is killed. Watching Chirin no Suzu is similar to watching Bambi in that it begins with the death of a parent; but unlike Bambi, Chirin is a take-charge, no-nonsense soul who will stop at nothing to become strong and avenge his lost loved one, well to a fault. And that in itself makes Chirin no Suzu the more compelling…and somewhat disturbing anime.
